George Miller’s 1956 theory of how much information people can remember:
“Seven, plus or minus two, chunks of information can be held in short-term memory.”
It doesn’t matter that my brother has dated his girlfriend for seven years or that she’s been a part of our family forever or that I have seen this wedding coming for a long time: I’m still going to cry at their wedding. Congratulations Tom & Beth!
After being off of Paleo for only a week, I already feel gross. I don’t know if it’s more a factor of holiday meals, eating things I don’t get very often because they’re local, or the large increase in drinking and social events. It’s probably some combination of all of them. Looking forward to getting home and feeling normal again.
St. Louis surprises me with how well it actually caters to visitors. So many great attractions are free, like the zoo & science center. Even paid attractions, like the Arch, are still very reasonably priced (the Arch only is $10/person). While I’m used to driving around, the MetroLink is quite a useful system now, too.
Travelling with someone who has executive status on an airline and getting all the early access, free baggage and fast pass security options makes travelling without that seem all of a sudden much more tedious.
Tableside margaritas are not to be underestimated.
Bowling is still fun. Who knew?!
My family thinks I am very hard to buy presents for (I’m not), but when they’re at a loss for ideas, they fall back to truffles and bacon, which means I always get awesome Christmas presents.
Christmas eve flights leaving from Ireland are not very full. Reminding myself to start flying on Christmas eve from now on.
Christmas/holidays/new year is the time of the year when everyone who owns a rarely-used mailing list remembers they haven’t sent out any updates in a while, and sends a random, boring newsletter which ends up just reminding you to unsubscribe.
Dates stuffed with nuts (walnuts or hazelnuts), wrapped in prosciutto & pan-fried are one of the greatest things I’ve ever made. Delicious & easy.
Úll means apple in Irish. It also now means a Dublin conference for iOS, Mac OS X and mobile web designers and developers. http://ull.ie
NPR’s StateImpact is a collaboration among NPR & local public radio stations in eight pilot states to examine public policy in depth. They provide explanatory, data-driven stories focused on how people’s lives are affected by government.
It is tricky to figure out how to turn someone else’s Instagram pictures into Stickygrams or other Instagram-API-using services. Here’s one way to do it: download Instake to your iPhone, search for the username you want, click on the photos you like & download to your phone. Then open Instagram, log out & create a new account (so the person doesn’t realize what you’re doing or think you’re stealing their photos) & upload the photos from your phone. Then you can log in to Prinstagram or Stickygram or whatever with those credentials & order whatever prints or magnets you like.
The Hole in the Wall is the longest, skinniest pub I’ve ever seen and has the best snug ever. It has great food and should win a prize for its over-the-top Christmas decorations.
